Green Gartside's (false) name is often mentioned in discussions of who our finest pop songwriter is. 'White Bread, Black Beer' is the reclusive genius's first album proper since 1999, and it's typically finely-crafted and unique. The Green vocals are unique on their own, and you'll never confuse the sound of him with anyone else - soft and high and wispy. The music itself is distinctive pop that beats comparison, and while it might strike you as a bit sugary or twee, a few listens brings out the brilliant songwriting and you find yourself smitten.
