One half of the American Pie filmmaking team, Paul Weitz, goes it alone again and doesn't quite come out with flying colours… particularly compared to his and his brother Chris' fantastic About A Boy.

Like his more recent film In Good Company, the story is interesting but Weitz's messages are too muddled to have an impact. In fact, it's hard to work out what he is trying to say, even if glimmering amongst the confusion are some fine satirical moments and comic performances.

Hugh Grant plays Simon Cowell type Martin Tweed, the host of Pop Idol style show American Dreamz, who recruits the gormless US President (Dennis Quaid) to appear as a guest judge. But there's trouble brewing: one of the contestants is an Iraqi immigrant (Sam Golzari) who just happens to be a half-hearted terrorist.
