In an attempt to upset her single dad (David Morse), teenager Tobe (Evan Rachel Wood) picks up the much older Harlan (Edward Norton) but pretty soon things start going wrong with their romance. To Tobe and her younger brother (Rory Culkin) their new pal is just a cowboy wannabe but to wiser eyes, like their father's, it is clear Harlan isn't just having fun and that his bizarre ways are actually hiding a much darker and messier man. This film from writer/director David Jacobson works mainly because the performances are so compelling and convincing, particularly those of Morse and rising star Wood.

Sometimes the story doesn't make sense, although it is emotionally haunting and always fascinating. It's also occasionally pretentious, particularly the performance of Norton which is clearly inspired by Robert De Niro's Taxi Driver character Travis Bickle.
