The Rough Trade label is always reliable to bring you quirky guitar bands, and San Francisco's Scissors for Lefty are a welcome addition to the stable. One of those bands who are clearly deadly serious about what they do but with a layer of smirky humour to lighten it, they've made an album there's little not to like about.

As with most listenable bands there's a jumble of influence in there, shades of a softer Hot Hot Heat and the more thoughtful Pulp. Anglophile American bands tend to take their British influence to heart and use it to better effect than actual Brits do. 'X's Are Forever' is moody and stylish, but with that air of anti-cool that's irresistible.
