TORONTO (Reuters)- Canadian country singer Shania Twain was given her country's highest award on Friday, the Order of Canada, for her efforts to end child poverty, the governor general's office said. Twain was handed the award by Governor General Michaelle Jean at a ceremony in Ottawa. Twain, who had a humble upbringing in a northern Ontario mining town, has supported school food-banks and breakfast programs, according to the governor general's office.

The Order of Canada is awarded to citizens for outstanding lifetime achievement and service to the nation or humanity at large. Other famous Canadians to receive the Order include hockey player Wayne Gretzky, and singer Bryan Adams.

The governor general is the personal representative of the Queen.
