Based on the life of the debauched second Earl of Rochester, John Wilmot. Set in the 1670s, poet Wilmot has a keen disregard for conformity and reponsibility so rather than spend time with his wife (Rosamund Pike) he parties wildly and has copious amounts of sex with other women including his regular prostitute (Kelly Reilly).

When King Charles II (John Malkovich) commissions him to write a play anti-authoritarian Wilmot turns out a completely inappropriate, offensive and downright filthy piece of work. In the process he falls for one of England's first actresses Elizabeth Barry (Samantha Morton) who he takes under his wing to foster her career.
