Reverand Walter Goodfellow (Rowan Atkinson) is the vicar of an English country town that's so small it's virtually non-existent. That doesn't stop him getting wrapped up in his job, particularly composing an all-important sermon. He's so self-involved that he doesn't realise his family's falling apart. His son is the local bullies' favourite target and his daughter Holly has more in common with Michael Douglas than his golf-loving wife Gloria Holly's a self-declared nymphomaniac. Even worse, Gloria is having the time of her life with her smarmy American golf coach (Swayze). Things look like they could be on the mend with the arrival of the Goodfellows' new housekeeper Grace (Maggie Smith), a meddling old lady who has a bizarre way of remedying the clan's problems.

Like Walter and Gloria's, this is a strange marriage it attempts to fuse very British humour with black comedy but misses the mark. The black comedy just doesn't work and sits oddly with the other humour, although there are a few laughs from the broader comic moments.
