Starring :
Morgan Freeman

The lifecycle of the incredible Emperor Penguins of Antarctica. When they reach sexual maturity they make the long, almost impossible trip from the ocean to their breeding grounds inland where they are safe from predators. But this isn't just a toddle to a cosy iceberg. They must journey through biting cold winds for 70 miles on their tiny legs that are more adept at swimming than walking. Once there they meet their mate, the female lays an egg and hands it over to the male to balance on top of his feet where he will keep it warm for several months while she returns to the sea to get food for their baby that isn't even guaranteed to hatch. When, and if, she returns he takes off and so it continues until the baby is old enough to fend for herself. But that's just the lucky ones: many of the babies don't hatch or their parents don't survive the long march and harsh conditions.

The French original featured actors voicing the penguins but this is a straight documentary. Morgan Freeman's narration provides us with all the facts and figures we need to accompany the often startling images. The cinematography is glorious director Luc Jacquet and his team spent over a year getting up close and personal with the amazing creatures, capturing images that haven't been committed to film before. The result is an awe-inspiring film that really puts things into perspective: our lives are a cinch compared to these penguins' existences.
