After a five-year silence, one of the most unusual female US artists returns with a new album. Fiona Apple's complex compositions are all almost over-stuffed, like an antique chaise-longue, with gabbling lyrics; the music itself is hardly relaxing, jumping as it does from jazz to semi-pop and back in a beat.

The man in your life is liable to dismiss it as Morrissette-esque whingeing. But these are beautiful songs from an eccentric young talent, and for every distressed lament such as O Sailor there is a jaunty Please Please Please. This album will sit nicely between Björk and Tori Amos in any collection.
