This semi-historical drama focuses on the legend of Native American princess Pocahontas who fell in love with British settler John Smith. Kicking off in 1607, Colin Farrell plays rebellious soldier Smith, one of the first British settlers in America. While leading a group sent to make contact with the Powhatan tribe he is captured and only freed after the insistence of the chief's daughter Pocahontas (Q'Orianka Kilcher). She and John fall for each other but this film is less about their love affair than a study of what happens when two very different cultures converge.

Made by The Thin Red Line director Terrence Malick, it is an earnest but jumbled drama that's overly long and unfocussed. Where dialogue would normally be there are patience testing montages that would be powerful…if they didn't go on so long it feels like you could've watched the Disney version of the tale in that time. With an overall running time of 149 minutes, viewers will need endurance.
