Don't be mistaken: this may look and smell like a generic, trashy Hollywood slasher but it's far more believable… and even gorier. A remake of Wes Craven's 1977 movie, it's directed by Alexandre Aja, the Frenchman behind the very bloody Switchblade Romance. He's left out most of the ingredients that we've come to expect in formulaic horrors and created a film that's very authentic feeling, hence as scary as hell.

The Carter family are on route to California but dad (Ted Levine), mum (Kathleen Quinlan) and their grown daughters (Vinessa Shaw, Emilie de Ravin, Dan Byrd) and son-in-law (Aaron Stanford) are in for some trouble when they opt for a short cut through the desert. Pretty soon they come face to face with a group of mutants, the terrifying result of nuclear testing in the area. And guess what? They love the taste of human flesh and will stop at nothing for a nibble.
