This film from the brothers behind The Matrix, Andy and Larry Wachowski, is based on a graphic novel by the man that wrote From Hell and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Alan Moore. If you didn't have much time for final two Matrix movies' pretentious cod-philosophising and nonsensical dialogue it's likely you'll find this frustrating. Fortunately, it's not quite as bad and the concept at its heart is just strong enough to stand the siblings' pompous treatment.

Set in 2020, V (Hugo Weaving) is a revolutionary who uses acts of terrorism to take a stand against the fascist government, led by Chancellor Sutler (John Hurt). V kidnaps Evey (Natalie Portman) to assist him in his work but, after spending time with the masked man, she starts empathising with his cause Patty Hearst style. Whether V's plan succeeds or not depends on if a pair of policemen (Stephen Rea and Rupert Graves) can track them down.
