This Aussie Western come morality tale is set in the 1880s. Written by musician Nick Cave, it's brutal, violent and very effective.

After he captures bushrangers Charlie Burns (Guy Pearce) and his brother Mikey (Richard Wilson), English policeman Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone) gives Charlie a horrific proposition: they'll be saved from death if he'll kill the main perpetrator of their crimes, their psychotic older brother Arthur (Danny Huston). Charlie is torn but tempted, mainly because vulnerable Mikey is a far more appealing character than Arthur. Unsure of what to do, he resolves to track down the vicious sibling and come to a decision later. But he encounters even more trouble along the way.

Captain Stanley has his own problems: he's copping flak about the deal from his colleagues and his wife (Emily Watson) is struggling to cope in the harsh country that seems to be full of morally corrupt men.
