Bachelor boy Tripp (Matthew McConaughey) still lives at home so his fed up parents (Kathy Bates and Terry Bradshaw) hire Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker) to coax him out. Her theory is that, due to low self-esteem, some men suffer from a failure to launch into the real world. Paula's tactic isn't so sound: she pretends to fancy the smitten lads and dates them until their confidence increases and they decide to move out. Obviously, Tripp's case isn't going to be easy because, darn, wouldn't you just know it, Paula really does fancy this one.

The concept at the heart of this film is a pretty dreadful one but more at fault is our two leads. Parker just isn't believable as Paula - you can't sympathise with her because she cruelly deceives these poor blokes - while McConaughey is the perfect example of a fine actor that never manages to create a likeable character.
